Recent books by two members of the French Section have been highly praised in this year’s Gapper Book Prize, run by the Society for French Studies.
Dr Ian James’sÌýThe Technique of Thought. Nancy, Laruelle, Malabou, and Stiegler after NaturalismÌýwas one of six books shortlisted for the prize; and Prof. Nicholas Hammond’sÌýThe Powers of Sound and Song in Early Modern ParisÌýwas the overall runner-up. The citation for Prof. Hammond’s book reads: “The members were very much impressed by its elegance of style, by the excitement generated by its topic, by its delicious unfolding of meticulous research and by the application of sonic theories to 17th-century French culture and society.â€
